Upgrade Vault 5.1.1 to Vault 7.1

Post by kha » Thu Jul 17, 2014 11:22 am

From reading this http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic ... &t=11648&p
I want to confirm if I have to upgrade to 5.1.2 (from 5.1.1) first before upgrading to 6.1 then lastly to 7.1?

Thanks,
Kim

You won't need to go to Vault 5.1.2 first. You're close enough. The main point of upgrading in stages is to get the database changes in. You can go from Vault 5.1.1 to 6.1.0 to 7.2.1.

One more question, Beth.

If I read this right, Vault 7.0 requires IIS 7 or higher with .NET 4.5 full framework.
Is that correct? If so, how come it says support Windows 2003 (which has IIS 6 and can't be upgraded to IIS7).

Currently my 5.1.1 is on windows 2003. I see that 7.0+ requires IIS7. That means I will need to upgrade OS on my Vault Web Server.

What is your recommendation since I have to upgrade my OS too (that means I will need to move my Vault Web Server to another server)? I appreciate the high level steps that you can give in your recommendations.

Here's the steps I would suggest:
  • 1) Backup your sgvault and sgmaster databases and make sure the backups aren't on the server machine.

    2) Check your SQL Server version to make sure that's supported as well. If there's any problem with the SQL version, let's discuss that before moving forward.

    3) Assuming you are staying on the same server machine, upgrade your Windows operating system. If you are moving to a different server instead, let me know and I'll post updated instructions.

    4) Once the server is upgraded, you can go through the steps to upgrade Vault.

2)
Currently my db is on SQL 2005, looks like i need to upgrade it too. The higher version SQL server I have available is SQL 2008 R2

3)
I will need to move to an existing Windows 2008 R2 server instead of upgrading OS my current Vault server

Then instead you probably want to take these steps.
1) Backup your Vault databases.

2) Restore the Vault databases to the new server. I'm assuming that server will have the new SQL version as well.

3) Install Vault 6.1.0.

4) Install Vault 7.1.0.

5) Have the users upgrade their clients.

6) Since the server changed, if users are using Vault integrated with Visual Studio or SSMS, then you will need to rebind to the new server. See instructions here: http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic ... 13&t=18956.

can i go straight from 6.1. to 7.2?
I assume during the 6.1 installation process, it will upgrade the db as well?

Sorry, you can go to Vault 7.2.1 from 6.1.0 instead of Vault 7.1.

Vault 6.1.0 will upgrade the database.

Hi Beth,

I am seeing vault 8 just released last month. Do you recommend to go all the way to Vault 8?
Can i go from 6.1 straight to 8 or have to roll to 7.2 first?

The requirements for a client depend a lot on what you are working with.

A good starting point would be it would be 1 GHZ CPU or better, 1 GB RAM or more, and 200 MB available hard disk space. If you want better performance, bump those requirements up.

Hi Beth,

I tested the upgrade on a new web server. I am ok with that and want to use it as production, however it's pointing to a test db. The production db is still with version 5.1, can i just run the web application install again and point it to production db then it can upgrade the production database to 7.2?

Or it won't work and I have to uninstall the current web application 7.2 on my new web server, start the whole upgrade process again and point to production database this time?

Thanks!
