Selective move and upgrade

Post by mdford » Tue Feb 03, 2015 8:45 am

We currently have 5 repositories on Version 6.1.0.531 on Server 2003/IIS6/SQL2005 and have a new server running Server 2008/IIS7/SQL2012 and will be installing the latest Vault version 8.0.

How would you recommend performing this upgrade?

Is it possible to selectively move and upgrade repositories? I would like to keep 3 of the repositories on the old server and move 2 of them to the new.

Thanks,
Michael

There are a couple different routes you can take.

The easiest is to uninstall your Vault 8 installation you currently have. Then backup your Vault 6 databases and restore them to the new server. From there you will upgrade the databases to Vault 7.2.1 and then Vault 8.0.1. You would then delete any repositories you didn't want in the current Vault 8.0 installation, and delete any you didn't want in Vault 6 from that installation.

A harder route is to use the Vault 6 Folder Export/Import tool and export what you want in Vault 6, and then use the Vault 8 Folder Export/Import tool to import that data to Vault 8.

If you don't need the history in Vault 8, a final option is to just perform a large Get with the Vault 6 client, and use the Vault 8 client to add the data to Vault 8.

Vault 8.0 doesn't upgrade directly from 6?

It's not recommended. See our Upgrading Guide.

We recommend in steps just to get the database upgraded. The clients don't need to upgrade in steps. You don't need to purchase licenses for the intermediate steps, nor do you even need to test for functionality. Just run the server installer. Then when the Vault 7.2.1 server installer finishes, you can immediately run the Vault 8.x installer.
