Turning off "Keep Checked Out"

I'm using the integration with VS.NET 2003. I kept selecting "Check In" but it seemed that nothing was happening. It then occured to me to look at "Show Pending Checkins."

Is there a way to turn off the "Keep Checked Out" setting in the integrated client? This default behavior is driving me nuts! I can turn it off in the stand alone client, but I haven't found a setting for the integrated client.

This is an option controlled by the IDE - it is at Tools->Options->Source Control->General->Keep items checked out when checking in.
