Will the Vault Standard 10.0.2 client work against the Vault Standard 10.1 Server to avoid a coordinated upgrade?

Just upgraded to 4.1. and Upgraded solution to Enhanced. Every time a developer opens the Solution it is exclusively checked out by that developer and all other developers have to dismiss multiple Dialogs that the solution is already checked out.
