:-) Well I've ordered the book you mentioned Christian, but I haven't gotten it yet. I have incorporated what I got from your comments here with the various things I've been reading elsewhere, all of which make sense to me. It's been especially helpful when there are discussions of other ways to org...

Just thought this picture might help. It represents my conception of how to setup the folders for development/releases/long term development, and what and when branching and merging would be done. $/trunk is your mainlne. It is where ongoing development of the next release takes place (is checked in...

Super slow with no feedback!

Help! This is all w/ Vault 2.0.6 I can do things in the client, such as request history, or delete a file using the context menu, but then nothing happens. Or at least nothing happens for a really long time like 10 or 15 minutes. This seems to happen a lot in the Vault Client where there is no obvio...

Hi Mike, I haven't read the articles at the end of the links but what you've just described sounds identical to the best practices recommended in a book called "Software Configuration Management Patterns" http://www.scmpatterns.com , so I think what you're suggesting (to yourself!) is pretty sound....

OK, well the commit finally finished, and what I see together with what you just said explains what was going on. When I originally did the add, I accidentally specified the wrong folder to add everything too, and so I aborted that transaction, and did the add again to the correct location. It didn'...

A little confused

OK, as far as I'm concerned it's fine that an infrequent operation like this takes a while, I agree with the decision to focus on improving the performance of day-to-day operations first. It would be nice to be informed while waiting that that this amount of time is expected however. Anyway, my conf...

I just found this article and although I haven't had a chance to read it yet, I think it is relevant and so, I'm adding it to this thread.

Long time ending transaction

I just did an add of our entire project tree, which consists of 20,141 files in 922 folders containing 922,886,345 bytes (880 MB), into a brand new Vault 2.0.6 repository residing on a SQL Server (ie not MSDE) using the GUI client not the IDE. I'm just wondering if the following times are expected: ...

Hmm, I seem to be replying to myself, but I've been reading various other messages here, as well as the article High-level Best Practices in Software Configuration Management from Perforce, and have some new thoughts on this. I'm thin...

More Questions about Branches, labels and snapshots

I have the same question phrased slightly differently. I've seen the post that recommends that under the root $ of a repository that you have the folders "branches", "trunk" and "snapshots". Now suppose the product this respository is for is Widget, and it is made up of 3 separate modules "client", ...

Other findings I'd like to have known before starting

I started the import of the other half of our SourceSafe database last night just to see how it would go. When I got in this morning, Windows was telling me that my C: drive was running low on space. The C: drive is where I've installed Windows and all applications and is where the Documents and Set...

VSS Import had a lot of transaction failed errors

I am in the process testing Vault to see if we can replace VSS with it at my company. I've pretty much narrowed down the choices to Vault or Perforce. One of the potential benefits to us of Vault is its stated ability to import our existing Visual SourceSafe database. It is 2G in size and contains r...
