Try turning off compression in 4.0 and see if that makes a difference.

Okay, we're looking into it now. Will you be able to use 3.5 temporarily?

How much RAM do you have on your SOS Server machine?

Are there lots of other services and applications running on the Server?

There seems to be a problem with the SourceSafe Automation component on your SourceOffSite Server machine. See the following article for more information:

Unfortunately, not anytime soon. :( SOS was not designed to support Chinese so it would take a lot of time to add it. Our next release, 4.1, will certainly not include Chinese support.

We've reproduced this problem as well and have logged it as a bug. We're currently working on a 4.1 release and a fix may be included in that release.

Most likely, you have some database corruption. Do you run SourceSafe Analyze on your database regularly? If not, try running Analyze and see what it reports.

What error message does the client display?

Also, it may help to enable verbose logging on the server to see if it provides more insight into the problem. This article explains how to set the logging level of the server:

If SOS does not display a shared icon when the file is unpinned, then it does not think the file is shared, which explains why the Branch menu is disabled.

Do you know the steps used by the VSS user to get the files into this state? Does the file appear shared in VSS after it is unpinned?

Is this crash reproduceable for you? Does it crash each time there is a conflict during checkin?

At what point does the crash occur?

For the users who have problems, do they share a common type of network? Are they passing through a firewall or proxy that the other users (who don't have problems) aren't? Do they receive a login dialog or does the failure occur before that point? Does it seem to make a difference if they use the s...

How are the files being pinned and shared? Using SOS or VSS?

Does the file show the shared icon correctly in the file list view?

If you are seeing the "Retrieving File List: $/..." message in the VS.NET output pane, then SOS is refreshing its file list and knows at that point what files are checked out by other users. However, the only way that VS.NET displays that information to the user is via the file icon in its...

Well, if its the "checked out by another user" status that you want to see reflected in the file icon in the project view, then what you have is a combination of two problems, the refresh problem, and the fact that VS.NET does not seem to paint its icons correctly. SOS appears to be sendin...
