Moving SoS from one server to another

Post by MarkGosden » Thu Oct 04, 2012 8:42 am

Hello,

I am new to SoS, so forgive me if this is an obvious question to answer - but I have searched the forums and cannot see anyone else having asked it.

We have SoS Server V3.5.1 running on a very low spec, old Server 2003 machine. I am keen to get it moved to a much improved virtualised platform but am unsure how to go about the migration of the data our SoS system currently has in it.

Could anyone advise?

Many thanks.

Just an FYI first that SOS 3.5.1 is not supported on Windows Vista, Windows 7, nor Windows 2008 Server. If you plan on updating your OS at all, you may want to consider upgrading your SOS version. In addition, support for SOS 3.5 ended in 2010: http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic ... 10&t=13122.

Please note that there is additional configuration needed if you are installing to another Windows 2003 machine. See this KB article: http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=48.

Once the Java Virtual machine is in place, all you need to do to move SOS is to uninstall it from the old machine and install it on the other machine. You can then configure it to connect to the old VSS database, or you can move the VSS install and point the new SOS install to wherever you moved VSS to as well.

For moving VSS, you will need to consult your Microsoft documentation. I *think* you just need to install your VSS server and client, copy over your VSS database, and then use the VSS admin tool to open the VSS database to manage it. You will want to make sure you have backups and run analyze regularly on your VSS database before doing anything with that.

The SOS manual is posted here: http://download.sourcegear.com/misc/sos ... efault.htm. It's quite a bit newer than the version you have, but most of the concepts are the same. The old help/manual will be in your software.
