SOS version 4.1

Post by sheshkrish » Tue Aug 06, 2013 5:47 am

Hello All,

I am new to using SOS, and my company has license of version 4.1

Can anybody help me with the following (maybe old query, sorry about that)

1) I want to create a COPY of an existing folder in SOS, and PASTE it as a backup. How can I do that?

2) Want to understand the concept of BRANCHING and how can that be used?

3) My Company uses SOS currently as a backup for daily code check-in and check-out; however we are having issues while attempting auto-merge. The process involves manually looking at files and merging the changed part. Is there a better way to do it?

4) Also, can someone provide me link to official documentation for SOS 4.1. The guy who handled this SOS left the company without passing on all info.

Thanks in anticipation.

1) SOS doesn't have a copy function. What you will need to do is get to disk the folder you want a copy of. Then create a new folder or project in SOS, and perform an add of the files from disk into the new folder. Another option might be to create a share/branch.

2) Branching is used whenever you want to take your code in two different directions. Some use it for releases so that bug fixes can be made to the release without affecting the trunk and its code that moves forward. The thing to remember for SOS is that you have to Share first and then Branch the Share.

Here are some helpful articles for you to read. Even though they are for Vault, the high-level concepts are the same.
Eric Sink's Source Control How To (there's a chapter on branching): http://www.ericsink.com/scm/source_control.html
Best Practices for Managing Branches: http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic.php?t=193
Basics of using Label, Cloak, Share, Pin, Branch and Merging: http://support.sourcegear.com/viewtopic.php?t=9

3) If there is a conflict in the merge, then SOS will require a manual merge. Are you using the Show Merge function for your manual merge?

4) We don't have a separate copy of the old help to send or post. A lot of the new documentation will still be useful for you though: http://download.sourcegear.com/misc/sos ... efault.htm.

Hi,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I am now able to do a share, then branch and creates a copy of the original into another folder.
Just wanted to check, how can find out the 'Branched' details? any place or name that I can look at?

Also, any way to find the size of folder using SOS? Right-click ain't giving option for Folder size, although I can traverse to file level to find file-size.

Thanks again!

Cheers.

You can find your branching information in your History.

There isn't a function to show the folder size. Checking it on your own disk is the best way.
