Performance Issue

Post by AJ » Mon Aug 22, 2005 12:27 pm

Hi,

I am evaluating SourceOffSite to be used by our remote team.

I come into a problem when compare SourceOffSite with SourceAnyWhere. It takes me more than 6 minutes to get the whole project and meanwhile, it only takes SourceAnyWhere 58 seconds to do the same job.

Am I doing something wrong?

There are 1297 files under the project and total size of the files are 11.3M.

Are all the files in a single folder? If the same number of files are spread out among subfolders, SOS performance is better than if all the files are in one folder.

However, we've fixed this issue for SOS 4.1.2. I can send you a preview of SOS 4.1.2 if you'd like to try it for your team.

Email me at Linda at SourceGear.com.

Linda,

I'd like to know when the new version is available to see if it eases some issues we're seeing in our environments.

Thanks,

AJ

Hi Linda,

Thank you for your help.

The problem is that the files are not under one folder. We have 42 folders. I think that is quite typical.

We also discovered that for other operations, such as checkin, checkout, the time differences between SOS and SAW are even bigger.

I am wondering if I miss some basic point here.

Anyway, I will email you to get the preview version to see if it helps.

Thanks.

Forgive me for butting in here, but I spent countless hours with a stopwatch in hand benchmarking SOS and have a certain... investment in this topic!

Are the files spread out pretty much evenly in your 42 folders or do a handful of them have a much larger percentage of the files? In my side-by-side testing, I found that SOS 4.1.1 was generally faster than SAW on gets with lots of internal directory structure, except when a few single folders held a disproportionally large number of files.

Hi bfinney,

Thank you for your info. I find SOS and SAW both have their own different strengths.

Thanks again.

Hi bfinney,

It seems SAW has released a new version and improved the particular sub projects issue. For the performance issues, I have to say...

Thanks.

Hi AJ,

I myself haven't tried SAW yet, but my boss did purchase SAW when I was evaluating SOS & Vault. And good performance is one of the reasons we chose SAW.

I am wondering if the performance issue has been fixed in SOS 5.0.3.

Thanks.
