SOS Concurrency crash in VSS 6.0c and earlier versions

Post by lbauer » Wed Jun 30, 2004 10:31 am

This applies to VSS 6.0c and earlier versions installed on the SOS Server machine.

A small subset of SourceOffSite users encountered a problem where the SourceOffSite server would intermittently crash. This crash would occur when different VSS users simultaneously performed certain operations. Internal tests here at SourceGear confirmed this to be a problem in the VSS APIs.

SourceGear has had a number of reports of server hangs with ssapi.dll version 06.00.8169, which was the earliest version of VSS 6.0. Other 6.0 and 6.0c versions may also cause a hang with concurrent users.

SourceGear worked with Microsoft to reproduce, isolate, and identify this issue. It was caused by multi-user access to the VSS Automation component. They have released a hotfix that should eliminate the crashes you have been experiencing if you are using VSS 6.0c or earlier on the SOS Server machine.

The hotfix is also available at

VSS 6.0d also may cause concurrency crashes in SOS, but there is a different solution. See this link for details:
