Anti-virus scanning can degrade SOS performance

Post by lbauer » Wed Jan 14, 2004 2:31 pm

Real time anti-virus protection can have a severe impact on SOS Server
operations. These programs check every read/write and SOS does a lot of
that. Microsoft's web site discusses the impact on VSS at this link: ... roduct=vss

Our customers have used various approaches to this problem:

-- Turn off real-time virus protection and do periodic scans instead.
(maybe a bit risky these days)

-- Exclude the VSS directory and the SOS Temp directory.

-- Move the VSS database to a network drive which is excluded from all
virus scanning.

--Rather than restricting virus checking in certain directories, you might
try configuring "real-time protection" to only look at extensions for virus
carrying file (i.e. .exe, .pif, etc).
