Feature Request: Copy file

Post by samuel_d_jack » Mon Jan 17, 2005 10:05 am

A feature request after a discussion with my boss:

He would like to be able to ask Vault to Copy a file (or a directory, I suppose), and have Vault copy the history of the file along with the file itself.

His situation is that he has a set of files that he uses as a foundation for further developments and he wants to take a copy of these so that he can make modifications to them; but he also want to preserve the history of the templates in the copied files.

Thanks,

This sounds a lot like the Branch command. Can you specify how it would work differently than branch?

You're right: I think the Branch command will do the trick. I just hadn't thought of it in that way before - I guess I had only thought about it in terms of Branching entire folders.

What is the behaviour when a couple of files are Branched into the same folder: is there any automatic renaming (to 'Copy of <FileName>' say)?

Upon invoking branch, you'll be prompted for a parent folder and name in a dialog. The branch will be rejected if there is a name conflict in the parent folder.
