edit in both files?

Post by sejtam » Wed Mar 10, 2010 12:32 am

I was looking for an app tat allows me to compare files side-by-side (mostly eyeballing, as the contents are related by not equal) and then edit each file to insert lines to that lines match up (timeline wise, can't rely on timestamps alone) and possibly delete some uninteresting lines.

I found Meld (hangs mostly on Leopard), DiffMerge and Changes. DIffmerge looks to be the most usable overall, but it only allows editing in the right-hand file. I need to be able to edit both files. Could this be added to DiffMerge? Or is there another alternative?

thanks

Sorry, but DiffMerge only allows the right panel to be edited.
The ability to edit all panels has been frequently requested, though.

As for other products that might meet your needs, you might look
through some of the products listed on this page:

Hello,

I have registered only to post these two things:

1. DiffMerge is a great tool that has made my life a lot easier, thanks a lot for making it (and I appreciate that it's free). It's by far my favourite diff tool.

2. I would really like this feature (ability to edit both files, not just the right one) to become available in a future version.

Thanks,
Dmitri

I have registered me for requesting this feature as well!!!

DiffMerge is a great software, very helpfull and time saving!

It will be perfect if :

1. you could edit left to right and right to left
2. Exclude some extensions (like dwsynch.xml and .DS_Store of my mac) and some folders (like cache folder)

Is there some page of development where I can read the new feature in progress?

Thx a lot, I wish that this features will be make!

I'll add your vote for editing on both sides.

As for excluding some extensions, see the Options/Preferences
dialog. On the "Folder Filters" there is a list of file suffixes that
should be ignored in "Folder Windows"; this is preloaded with
many common binary and common compiler trash files. You
could add xml to the first list. As for whole folders to be ignored,
such as your cache folders, you can add it to the second list; this
list is prepopulated with common directories that should not be
searched.

We currently have a problem ignoring .DS_Store files (because
the file filtering assumes that the first list contains only suffixes
and supplies the "*." so the pattern doesn't get constructed
correctly).

WRT to a new features/development progress page. I don't
have anything like that currently. Sorry.

I have followed the good example of previous posters and registered just to ask if someone can add my vote to "edit both files" too! Diffmerge is the only halfway decent merge tool I've found for mac, but being unable to edit both files makes it very awkward at times!

The ability to edit both sides is a "must" for me. I'm one of these backwards folks who likes to see "my" version of the file on the left, with the "other" version on the right, so not being able to edit "my" version makes the tool a bit cumbersome for me.

I've been a long-time, licensed user of Beyond Compare, which supports this feature, but won't run nicely on Mac OSX. :(

DiffMerge is the best alternative I've found for Mac, but without the ability to edit both sides, I'm tempted to go back to running BC on my Mac via Wine.

I'm assuming that swapping which side the files isn't something you want to do? I'll add your vote to the feature request, but swapping which file appears on which side would be a work-around for you.

Please add my vote for this feature as well. I don't want to swap sides for editing. Sometimes I'm making changes to mostly the file on the right, but there's something that should be done on the left file instead (think of a production setting change that never made it back to the QA settings).

Thanks for makiing this great tool, it is by far the best free option, and the folder compare is great.
Registered just to add my vote, I think I am also spoiled by BeyondCompare too! In addition, two-way editting will make 3-way diff easier if you ever plan to implement that.

One more feature request, I currently use rsync to folder sync, if it can be integrated to diffmerge it will be just perfect, I personally cannot think of any other feature.

Thanks again
