Admin Section - Object reference not set to an instance ...

Post by perfectus » Thu Aug 21, 2008 3:32 pm

Hi,

I have recently upgraded both our Vault Server and Clients from version 3.5.1 to 4.1.2.18185 and have been successfully using the upgraded vault for over a week. Yesterday however I needed to force an undo check out on some files in one of our repositories, so I logged into the Vault Server on the Server's website and attempted to go to the Undo Checkout for the Repository in question and received an Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. I then tried other sections of the admin area for the repository and other repositories and receive the same error.

Below is a summary of what I am experiencing:
  • http://[vault server]/vaultservice/admin/UndoCheckOut.aspx?repid=6
    • Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
  • http://[vault server]/vaultservice/admin/Groups.aspx?repid=6
    • Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
  • http://[vault server]/vaultservice/admin/RepositoryAccess.aspx?repid=6
    • Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
  • http://[vault server]/vaultservice/admin/FolderSecurity.aspx?repid=6
    • Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
  • http://[vault server]/vaultservice/admin/Obliterate.aspx?repid=6
    • Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
  • http://[vault server]/vaultservice/admin/FileTypes.aspx?repid=6
    • Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
  • http://[vault server]/vaultservice/admin/KeywordExpansion.aspx?repid=6
    • Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
  • http://[vault server]/vaultservice/admin/ShadowFolders.aspx?repid=6
    • Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
  • http://[vault server]/vaultservice/admin/RepositoryStats.aspx?repid=6
    • Works as expected

I have attached our sgVault log for your reference.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers

Andre

Have you accessed the Admin web page since the upgrade?
What happens if you try to access that web page from a different computer?

I have accessed the Admin section after the upgrade, just not the specific pages mentioned, (I logged into the admin section to apply the updated license number).

I have attempted to access the admin pages in question from the Vault Server and from other machines - all with the same error message. I have also attempted to user The old version had an Admin Client - I assume the only admin functionality is now provided by the vaultservice website?

Also, as a side note - I did have login issues after I first performed the upgrade. Using the forum and piecing a couple sgvault log entries together, I found that I needed to add the user accessing the sgvault database to the sgmaster one also - seems the installer did not do this correctly. After I added this everything seemed to be work fine.

I have just tried to access http://[Vault server]/VaultService/Admin/Users.aspx and have received the error: Error in the application. So this area also has issues.

Some more info that might help narrow things down (since the log file I attached is massive)...

I backed up the sgvault.log file and cleared it out and tried again to see what is logged on one attempt at accessing the admin undo checkout section and this is what was logged:

Could I have you perform an iisreset on that server? Just go to Start - Run and type iisreset. Then try to access the admin page again.

Hi,

I had thought I had done this - but have just done the ISSReset as requested.

After the IISReset and trying all the admin sections again - all is happily working.

Thanks for your help.

It happens to me & the solution works.
I have to install Fortress in a new server after a major break down yesterday.
After restoring the back up database, i ran into the same problem.

i was getting this as well, and resetting IIS didn't help.

after a while, i decided to reset the security settings on the VaultService folder.

This fixed the issue.

Hope this helps someone in the future :)
