Installer error 2753 on Client 5.0.1 install via GPO

In order to keep our developers at the current release of Vault I have set up a software deployment via Group Policy for Vault. This used to work just fine with Vault 4.x and Windows XP. In the meantime, we have got new workstations with Windows Vista x64. I'm therefore not sure if the problem also exists on Windows XP and if the older versions (4.x) would work on the Vista machines if deployed this way; I had Vault pre-installed on the image for the new workstations.

Anyways, it seems that the installer fails during the VSIP installation custom action (see screenshot). I've also found this thread at Advanced Installer which describes the same error.

Could you send us a copy of the Vault_client_install.log from the failed installation?

The log should be in the temp directory of the Windows user account that was logged into the machine during installation.

There seems to be no such file; I even re-ran the install and searched the complete hard disk for it.

The error that you referenced on the Advanced Installer forum was a completely different scenario even though it is the same error number. That particular error only occurred when the client installer was installed as part of the Server install and it has since been fixed. We changed the way the client install is called from the server and have not seen the error since.

Not much has changed with the client installer in the 5.0 release.

Does other software install OK with your Group Policy setup? The VSIP part of the client installer does require elevated privileges (you do get UAC prompt during that part of the install).

Can you try just installing the client on one of the machines without the Group Policy and see if you still get the error?

Other GPO installs work fine.

Also, UAC is mostly disabled on those dev machines (automatic elevation without prompt, always run as real admin, no virtual registry).

Installing the same MSI (from the identical location on the network) manually works fine.

We wish we could help, but we haven't tested installation via GPO, so are unable support it. We can help if you run into any problems with a manual installation.

Maybe you could consider testing it. Because it is a nightmare to run to each machine and platform to update vault clients, if it could just happen automatically when logging onto a machine.

By the way, I just logged into an old XP client and wonderfully got Vault 5.0.1 installed during logon. Therefore this issue seems to be related to Vista machines only.
