Mac client release date?

Post by Colen » Mon Aug 27, 2012 7:02 pm

Hi,

One of the main reasons we kept up our maintenance payments was the upcoming mac version of the Vault client, but the full version has yet to be released. Do you have an ETA for when the mac client will be rated for production use? We're developing mac versions of our products now, so it would be great to have the GUI rather than the command-line tools we're currently using. :(

Also, once the mac client is released, will there be an updated of the vault server required? We'd prefer to do a migration to vault 6 now, but if another update will be needed to get things ready for the mac client we'd rather just wait until then to do it.

Thanks for your help!

The main obstacle we're facing with finishing the Mac client is the instability of the Mono framework. We're still working through those issues. We've been using the Mac client internally and it is operationally sound; most of the remaining issues are in the UI due to the problems with Mono. However, we did release an updated preview of the Mac GUI client which will work with a Vault 6 server:

Our plans are that the final release of the Mac GUI Client will NOT require a server update. It will work with the current Vault 6 server so you can proceed with your migration now.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if the issues with Mono are in parts of the app that someone would use during daily use of source control, or if they're more obscure things that could be done on a PC instead (e.g. merge branches tool, blame function, etc)?

The issues with Mono affect the user interface in all areas of the app but the effects are intermittent and hard to reproduce.

For example, one issue we have seen is that on occasion when a dialog is raised, the user will see multiple instances of the dialog. Restarting the application is the easiest way to get past these problems and we've never seen them effect the integrity of data, but they can be frustrating for the user.

You could try the Mac client to see if, despite these issues, it is better than using command line tools.
