Feature Suggestion: Merge File History

Post by joshyeager » Wed Jan 26, 2005 1:10 pm

One of my developers renamed some files on her local machine, and then checked in the files with the new names.

It would be cool if there was a way (probably in the Admin tool) to retroactively mark a file as having been renamed. So, I could select the old file, and tell Vault that it was renamed to the new one. Vault could then merge the two histories, and change the new file's "Created" record to a "Rename" one.

Of course, this won't work if the old file was changed after the new one was created - I don't know how you'd handle that.

Vault is awesome, keep up the good work!

The recommended way to do a file rename in Vault is to rename the file in Vault, then do a get latest and check it out/edit/check it in. In terms of Vault's internal design, it would be virtually impossible to retroactively link the two different files to the degree that you're asking.

Too bad.

I know that renaming within Vault is the way you're supposed to do it, but it would be nice to be able to recover from mistakes like that.

Oh well...
