Please Help with Shadow Folders

Post by TCM » Mon Apr 30, 2007 11:19 am

Shadow folders are giving me trouble again. I've set up or repaired shadow folders about 3 times, and every time is an ordeal. In the end, I always need to turn on debugging and send the log file to tech support.

Now I'm configuring shadow folders on a new server and, once again, I'm having trouble. Instead of posting the entire log file, I'll just quote the relevant section. The following message is repeated over and over in vaultshadowfolderservice.txt.
4/30/2007 9:08:45 AM <generic>: [<No Name>:6096] Vault's Shadow Folders encountered an exception attempting to login to the Vault Server for Repository ID 10. Unable to connect to http://DEDJ103/VaultService. No server was found at the specified URL. Please verify your network settings using the Options dialog under the Tools menu in the Vault GUI Client. Web Exception: The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found.
DEDJ103 is the name of the server. How do I fix this?

Judging from the number of posts concerning shadow folders, it seems I'm not the only one who has trouble with them. A suggestion to SourceGear: You would probably save everyone a lot of time and frustration if you prepare a "shadow folder troubleshooting guide". I would certainly try to debug the problem myself, if only I had some documentation.

What version of Vault are you using?

What operating system is Vault installed on?

Is the Shadow Folder service running on the same machine as the Vault Server?

Can you connect to http://DEDJ103/VaultService with the Vault GUI Client? Or is Vault using https (SSL)?

Thanks. Your reply gave me the clue I needed. I replaced "DEDJ103" with "localhost" in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\VaultService\VaultShadowFolder\Web.config, and that seems to have solved the problem.

I don't understand why the fix works. As far as I know, "DEDJ103" should be perfectly equivalent to "localhost". Nevertheless, it does work and I won't second-guess it.

FYI: I'm using Vault 3.51. The operating system is Windows Server 2003. The Shadow Folder service is on the same machine as the Vault Server. With the client, I can connect to localhost, but not DEDJ103. I'm not using SSL.

It's magic. :D

Seriously, it's hard to say -- maybe a problem with DNS? Glad it's working for you now.
