Specified Cast is not Valid when connecting

Post by dfwbrent » Tue May 17, 2005 2:18 pm

SourceGear Vault Error:

Server was unable to process request --> Specified Cast is not valid.

We get this message out of nowhere when trying to connect when we are in Visual Studio 2003. Any ideas? We bumped the server, but no luck. Need access asap as a project deadline is today.

authentication

Post by dfwbrent » Tue May 17, 2005 2:23 pm

this is actually an issue with us logging in. I cannot even login as admin on the server. Use a good password, then use a bad password, and you get the same error.

What has changed in the configuration of the machine (assuming you were connecting fine until now)? Often these kinds of errors are because teh underlying .Net framework has changed.

For emergency use, you can always use the Vault GUI client to check files in.

Actually, this server is really just used for backups, and source control, so our development machines are completely separate servers. Plus, the network admin says nothing has changed at all, configuration wise, on this machine.

Oh, we cant login to the GUI via teh server or our local machines, this error persists when trying to login from teh client tools as well.

Check the server log at %windir%/temp/sgvault, and see whether it contains a better message.

It is important to know whether this was working until today or whether it has never worked.

Logs did it

Post by dfwbrent » Tue May 17, 2005 2:58 pm

Well, I didn't think to look for this log file, and it spells out the real issue quite clearly. We had no more room in our primary filegroup on our sql server installation. Needless to say, I did a dbcc shrinkfile on it immediately and its now working. The error thrown threw me off course there :)

Thanks for your help!

Vault Version 4.0.6.15954

Post by jkp*74 » Mon Jan 07, 2008 2:20 am

Suddenly Vault Client respond with various error messages, such as Invalid Cast, login fail, No Permission, etc. I have attached the log file. Prior to this, i am performing obliteration. Will this cause a problem? Is there any setting i have missed out?

jkp: Try first clearing your cache. The obliterate function is an admin level function, so in your cache area there should be a folder for admin. (%username%/local settings/application data/local settings/sourcegear/vault_1)

jkp: Also, if your log file was huge, that could be causing this. It looks like you posted to the LDF is Enormous thread. If you need help with that part, you can always send an email to support at sourcegear.com as well.

After restarting the server, no more error recorded in the log. Will stop obliteration for now. The sgvault_log.LDF size now is 17GB.

Before jumping to that thread, did you ever get that LDF file cut down? That's large enough that I would expect problems to arise from it.
