Cannot abort "Get Latest" operation

Post by davenovak » Mon May 09, 2011 1:55 pm

Does Vault support the concept of aborting (or canceling) a Get Latest operation? I see that the Abort button is enabled on the toolbar and I can click this during a long Get operation, but it doesn't seem to work. Instead of immediately canceling the Get operation, the Get operation continues on its merry way for several minutes more. And if you inadvertently do a Get on the wrong root folder, I might be waiting an hour for the Vault operation to finish.

I've also noticed that doing an End Task on the Vault client can lead to corruption of the local Vault cache. So that's not really an option either.

If aborting a Get Latest operation is supported, please explain what I might be doing wrong. If it's not supported, please add this to your feature request list.

The abort operation takes time cleaning up threads, waiting for server communication, etc.

We do support it, but the "Abort" isn't as efficient as we'd like. We have bug 6036 logged for this, and I've added your comments.

Just to place to the expectation appropriately, I would intuitively think that Abort should be virtually instant, taking < 15 seconds (tops) to complete. My experience shows that sometimes Abort returns in a reasonable time-frame, yet the more typical case I've seen (depending upon when I click the Abort button) is that abort is still "aborting..." 15 - 30 minutes after initiating the Abort request. Here's an example:

Code: Select all

[5/10/2011 11:04:15 AM] Getting latest version of $/CryENGINE3/ArtSrc
[5/10/2011 11:04:32 AM] Aborting...
[5/10/2011 11:04:16 AM] Fetched $/CryENGINE3/ArtSrc/Objects/1A_Drivasser/Props/Natural/Fallen_timber/D_large_tree_fallen.max
[5/10/2011 11:04:16 AM] Fetched $/CryENGINE3/ArtSrc/Objects/1A_Drivasser/Props/Natural/Rock_sets/D_rock_formations.max
[5/10/2011 11:04:16 AM] Fetched $/CryENGINE3/ArtSrc/Objects/1A_Drivasser/Props/Breakable/D_break_guard_tower.max
 -- 1500 Lines "Fetched $/CryENGINE3/ArtSrc/..." lines omitted
[[5/10/2011 11:19:14 AM] Finished get latest of $/CryENGINE3/ArtSrc
[5/10/2011 11:04:32 AM] Operation aborted.
Please note that although Abort was selected, the Get Latest operation continued like normal, downloading more that 1500 large files from the server. This is far from being merely inefficient; I'd call this behavior a bug!

This has been a point of frustration for many of our developers (myself included) for quite some time and we'd like to see it addressed.

I can see where waiting for the client to actually stop would be frustrating. I've bumped the bug up in priority.
Thanks for your feedback.

I'd like to add my vote here as well. I get many complaints about this.
